Global Automakers Embrace China's NEV Technology at Shanghai Auto Show

The 2025 Shanghai Auto Show has emerged as a pivotal platform where global automakers are demonstrating their latest advancements in smart new energy vehicles (NEVs). According to Deutsche Bank analyst Wang Bin, international brands are now leveraging Chinese technology and partnerships to compete effectively in the local market. For years, domestic manufacturers have dominated the Chinese NEV sector with innovative product lines. However, recent developments indicate that global brands are catching up, showcasing an array of advanced NEVs powered by collaborations with Chinese partners.

Key Highlights from the Shanghai Auto Show

In the vibrant setting of the biennial Shanghai Auto Show, which commenced on April 23 and continues until May 2, several groundbreaking models have been unveiled. The event spans over 360,000 square meters and features nearly 1,000 companies from 26 countries and regions. Among the highlights is Volkswagen’s ID. EVO all-electric SUV, built using Xpeng’s G9 electric SUV technology and equipped with 800V high-voltage fast charging and urban NOA capabilities. Another standout is SAIC Audi’s E5 Sportback, developed on an advanced digitized platform integrating years of SAIC’s NEV expertise.

Additionally, SAIC-GM Buick presented its ENCASA MPV alongside precursor models for sedan and SUV segments based on the "Xiaoyao" platform tailored for China. Changan Mazda introduced the EZ-60 SUV, available in both all-electric and extended-range versions, utilizing Changan’s electric platform architecture. Dongfeng Nissan showcased the N7, leveraging its modular NEV architecture and Dongfeng’s "Quantum architecture 2.0" technology.

GAC Toyota launched the bz3X all-electric SUV featuring GAC Aion’s "Aion Electric Platform (AEP) 3.0" EV technology. Cadillac’s Vistiq, equipped with Nvidia’s Orin-X chip and algorithms from a Chinese supplier, offers door-to-door NOA in urban areas. FAW-Toyota displayed its electric SUV bZ5, powered by Nvidia’s Orin-X chip for urban NOA capabilities, while Honda revealed its electric sedan Ye GT with Huawei’s smart cockpit component.
