In recent times, the Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) has garnered significant attention due to endorsements from prominent figures like Elon Musk and US Vice President JD Vance. This far-right party, established in 2013 as a Euroskeptic and anti-immigration movement, has steadily grown its influence within Germany’s political landscape. Today, it holds 77 seats in the Bundestag, over 280 in state parliaments, and 15 in the European Parliament. The rise of the AfD can be partly attributed to its youth wing, the Junge Alternative (JA), which has played a pivotal role in shaping the party’s direction. Researchers have highlighted the importance of studying these youth wings to understand the radicalization process better and develop effective counter-strategies.

The JA emerged as a key player in the AfD’s growth. Initially, the relationship between the two entities was complex, with occasional tensions. However, over time, they grew closer, and by 2017, approximately 8.5% of AfD members in the Bundestag were also part of the JA. The youth wing’s activities, including social media engagement and literature dissemination, have significantly influenced the AfD’s radicalization. Interviews with JA members reveal that the youth group has become increasingly aligned with more extreme right-wing positions since 2020. This shift has paralleled the AfD’s own move towards harder stances, even as it attempts to maintain an image of legitimacy among voters.

The symbiotic relationship between the JA and the AfD has been instrumental in the party’s development. Despite occasional distancing efforts, the AfD has not severed ties with its youth wing. Instead, both organizations present themselves as the “true opposition” against corrupt elites and intelligence services. This alignment has contributed to the AfD’s broader base of support while also drawing increased scrutiny from German intelligence agencies. The JA, now labeled as a “proven extremist” group, has been under close observation for several years.

Understanding the dynamics between the AfD and its youth wing offers valuable insights into the mechanisms of far-right radicalization. By examining these relationships, researchers and policymakers can identify early warning signs of extremism and implement preventive measures.
