The acclaimed stealth game "Dishonored" emerged from an unexpected path, evolving from initial, unfulfilled proposals for a new "Thief" installment and a "Blade Runner" adaptation. This fascinating origin story was recently unveiled by the game's former co-directors, Raphael Colantonio and Harvey Smith, during a retrospective YouTube session. Their candid discussion shed light on the creative process and the financial pressures that shaped Arkane Studios' pivotal project. It underscores how unforeseen circumstances and strategic pivots can lead to the birth of iconic gaming experiences, transforming potential setbacks into groundbreaking successes for both the developer and the genre.
In a revealing YouTube video, former Arkane Studios co-directors Raphael Colantonio and Harvey Smith discussed the early development stages of "Dishonored." Colantonio shared that Arkane was facing financial struggles when Bethesda approached them with the opportunity to develop a game within the "Thief" franchise. This prospect greatly excited Colantonio, who saw it as a chance to work on a beloved IP and secure the studio's future. Smith later confirmed that this project was indeed intended to be "Thief 4."
Subsequently, Bethesda also offered Arkane the chance to pitch a "Blade Runner" video game, leading to two internal teams competing for the next major project. Colantonio led the "Thief 4" effort, while Smith headed the "Blade Runner" team, which even began animating characters capable of superhuman feats. Despite the enthusiasm and creative investment in both concepts, Bethesda was ultimately unable to secure the necessary intellectual property rights for either "Thief" or "Blade Runner."
Colantonio initially feared that the failure to secure these IPs would lead Bethesda to abandon Arkane. However, Bethesda presented a new proposition: to continue developing their concepts under an original IP, which would become "Dishonored." This decision was pivotal, as the foundational ideas for "Dishonored" were largely derived from their work on the "Thief 4" pitch. Smith, whose "Blade Runner" project also didn't materialize, joined Colantonio as co-director for "Dishonored." Although some elements, like the "shadows always hide the player" mechanic from "Thief," were eventually refined or removed, "Dishonored" developed its unique visual style and gameplay, establishing itself as a classic in the stealth genre.
This journey highlights the transformative power of adaptation and resilience within game development. The inability to pursue established franchises ultimately paved the way for Arkane Studios to forge its own distinct and celebrated IP, leaving a lasting legacy in the gaming world.
