Empowering Game Creators: A New Era of Worker Protections
Uniting for Change at the Game Developers Conference
Echoing last year's impactful presence, members of the United Videogame Workers of CWA gathered at the Game Developers Conference on Wednesday. Their renewed demonstration served as a platform to launch a significant campaign advocating for robust protections for game industry professionals. A key highlight was the introduction of a comprehensive "Game Workers' Bill of Rights."
A Collaborative Platform for Union Initiatives
The UVW members, alongside their counterparts from the ZeniMax QA union and the World of Warcraft team union, organized a compelling panel discussion focused on successful game worker union campaigns. This session delved into effective strategies for unionizing within studios and outlined the future objectives of the UVW. Following this informative dialogue, a contingent of developers marched to the Yerba Buena Gardens, a location that has itself become a focal point of discussion due to recent changes in public access at GDC.
Defining Fundamental Rights for Game Professionals
During their demonstration at Yerba Buena, the assembly, comprising approximately 50 developers, vociferously chanted slogans such as "videogames are worker-made" and "game workers united will never be defeated." Organizers presented the inaugural draft of their "Bill of Rights," envisioning it as a foundational document for universal protections. This framework is intended to assist existing unions, like those at Blizzard and ZeniMax, in their bargaining efforts and to serve as a comprehensive model for emergent unions and independent contractors seeking to champion their rights.
Key Pillars of the Proposed Bill of Rights
The proposed Bill of Rights outlines critical safeguards, including provisions to protect workers from the unchecked implementation of AI as a substitute for human labor, mandates for anti-crunch policies to prevent excessive work hours, and robust protections for remote employees. Additionally, the bill emphasizes safeguarding immigrant workers in the United States from potential targeting by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents.
Expanding Advocacy and Community Engagement
This period marks an exceptionally busy time for UVW-CWA, as the union is also launching its broader "We don't play with ICE campaign." Furthermore, it has announced an upcoming, free-to-attend "Gamer Workers Conference," scheduled to take place online this May, further extending its outreach and advocacy efforts across the gaming community.
