Game Freak's 'Beast of Reincarnation' Preview: A Challenging Yet Intriguing Action RPG

Game Freak, the studio celebrated for its beloved Pokémon series, is embarking on a bold new journey with its latest title, 'Beast of Reincarnation.' This action RPG diverges significantly from their usual family-friendly fare, presenting a gritty, combat-centric experience set in a dystopian future. The game promises a compelling narrative and deep progression, challenging players with its demanding mechanics and unique world design. Despite some initial hurdles with tutorials, the overall impression from a recent preview suggests an intriguing and potentially rewarding adventure for those seeking a more intense gaming experience.

For years, video games have seen a prevalence of feline companions, with titles like 'Stray' leading the charge. However, 'Beast of Reincarnation' marks a refreshing shift, placing a shaggy, wolf-like dog named Koo at the forefront alongside the protagonist. Game Freak, a name synonymous with Pokémon titles from 'Red and Blue' to 'Legends: Z-A' and the highly anticipated 'Winds and Waves,' is now exploring a darker, more mature genre reminiscent of 'Monster Hunter' and 'Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice.'

A recent 90-minute demo in Los Angeles offered a glimpse into the game's opening sequence. Set in the year 4026, a millennium after the collapse of civilization, humanity's emotional suppression has led to soul decay, manifesting as a destructive miasma. This miasma has transformed animals into colossal, monstrous beings known as Nushi. Players assume the role of Emma, a Purifier tasked with battling these creatures. Emma, with her distinctive samurai-gorpcore aesthetic and braided hair adorned with flowers, is accompanied by a sickly girl and her loyal wolf-dog, Koo. Their journey through the former Kanto region of Japan, in a vehicle that is a futuristic blend of an AT-ST and an Airstream trailer, sets a visually striking and melancholic tone.

The initial combat sequences introduce players to basic movements and attacks, but the full scope of Emma's abilities, including ranged attacks, finishers, Koo's magical quick-time events, and Emma's charge attacks, is unveiled in the ruined village of Ogouchi. Here, the game's steep learning curve becomes apparent. Emma possesses unique traversal abilities, such as using her hair as a zipline or to create temporary horizontal bridges. However, the lack of clear aiming reticules and minimal in-game explanations make mastering these mechanics a challenge. Unlike comprehensive tutorials found in games like '007 First Light,' 'Beast of Reincarnation' initially leaves players to discover much of its complexity on their own.

The game's initial boss fight against a towering stag Nushi highlighted the issues with the tutorial system. Without a firm grasp of advanced combat techniques, players might struggle, often activating abilities without fully understanding their function. Despite these early frustrations, the rich world-building, compelling narrative, and the promise of deep customization and progression systems create a strong desire to continue playing. The bond between Emma and Koo, and the desire to uncover the mysteries of this post-apocalyptic world, serve as powerful motivators. 'Beast of Reincarnation' is slated for release on August 4th across PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X.
