In this year's NFL Draft, the Florida State Seminoles celebrated a successful transition of several players into professional ranks. Among them are standout cornerback Azareye’h Thomas, who was selected by the New York Jets at pick No. 73, and defensive tackle Joshua Farmer, chosen by the New England Patriots at No. 137. Additionally, placekicker Ryan Fitzgerald joined the Carolina Panthers as an undrafted free agent, while quarterback DJ Uiagalelei found his way to the Los Angeles Chargers. The most recent addition to this list is defensive back Fentrell Cypress II, who reportedly signed with the Washington Commanders as an undrafted free agent.
Fentrell Cypress II, originally from Rock Hill, South Carolina, transferred to FSU from Virginia before the 2023 season. Throughout his collegiate career spanning 42 games, he accumulated impressive statistics: 125 tackles, 27 passes defended, four tackles for loss, two fumble recoveries, and one interception. Despite suffering a season-ending injury in 2024 that limited him to nine games, Cypress showcased remarkable athleticism during Florida State’s Pro Day. He clocked a 4.43-second 40-yard dash, recorded a 38-inch vertical jump, and achieved a 10-foot-3 broad jump, all of which contributed to his appeal as a potential NFL player.
The Washington Commanders have already bolstered their secondary by drafting Ole Miss cornerback Trey Amos, deemed an 'elite corner' by Pro Football Focus, and now they add Cypress to join star corner Marshon Lattimore. This move aims to strengthen a unit that conceded the third-fewest yards in the league last season. Cypress's inclusion reflects the Commanders' confidence in his recovery and future contributions on the field.
Beyond Cypress, numerous former FSU athletes have secured spots across various NFL teams. These include RB Trey Benson with the Arizona Cardinals, DB Jammie Robinson also with the Cardinals, OLB Josh Sweat, WR Keon Coleman, K Dustin Hopkins, DL Mario Edwards Jr., DB Ronald Darby, among others, showcasing the widespread impact of FSU talent in the league.
As Cypress joins the Commanders, the team anticipates a boost to their defense, particularly in light of his proven skills and potential. His signing underscores the ongoing commitment of NFL franchises to recruit top-tier college athletes, further elevating the competitive landscape within the league.
