When Torres first started the Latinos in Action club at Spanish River High, it had just ten members. Today, the club has grown to an impressive 250 students, reflecting the diverse needs and backgrounds of the school's population. Torres recognizes that many of his students have left their families behind in search of a better future, and he is determined to provide them with a sense of community and belonging."We pride ourselves on saying 'we are a familia,'" Torres explains. "I believe a lot of them come here and they leave their families... It's tough coming here and not knowing the language. It's tough coming here and learning a new language, and how do I fit in? How do I survive? and often Latinos In Action, is an opportunity to feel a little bit more at home.
