Fresno, California is witnessing a significant milestone as the 'Dogs' embark on a new chapter. On Friday, the first major housing development at Fresno State broke ground, marking a crucial step in the university's evolution. This new 80,000 square foot building will rise four stories high and accommodate over 200 beds. Currently, the campus mainly offers traditional dorm rooms, but this addition will provide upperclassmen with apartment-style living. Erin explains, "It's still two people in a bedroom, but they'll have a living room, kitchen, and all the amenities like washers and dryers. It's like an apartment complex on campus."
Meeting Student Needs
The new dorm is specifically designed to cater to the diverse needs of students. Currently, about 30% of Fresno State students have children, so several units will be designated for parents. Another key aspect is affordability. Since the pandemic, housing in Fresno has increased by 28%, but these dorms are promised to be affordable. Faith Vanhoven, the ASI Student Body President, shares her excitement. "Having a student life on campus allows students to experience all that Fresno State has to offer. It's crucial when coming to a new place and building relationships. If you're on campus, you can be part of the campus community."Construction and Funding
The project is being funded by an over $30 million affordable student housing grant from the state and about $20 million through the Cal State system. This significant investment shows the university's commitment to providing better housing facilities. Among all the Cal State schools, Fresno has the lowest percentage of housing space offered to students. President Dr. Saúl Jiménez-Sandoval emphasizes the importance of this upgrade. "The future of Fresno State is intertwined with the future of the Valley. As Fresno State grows stronger, the valley benefits as well. This housing development is long overdue to ensure the university remains competitive and adapts to the changing landscape."Completion Timeline
Construction is expected to be completed by fall of 2026. This gives students and the community something to look forward to. It will not only enhance the campus life but also provide a more comfortable and convenient living environment for students. As the project progresses, it will bring a new energy to the Fresno State campus.
