French Cosmetics Industry Sees Steady Growth Amidst Shifting Global Markets

In 2024, the French cosmetics sector witnessed a notable increase in exports, reaching a record of 22.5 billion euros, up by 6.8% from the previous year. This growth, however, has slowed down compared to the robust 10.8% recorded in 2023, primarily due to decreased demand from China. Perfumes emerged as the leading category, contributing significantly to this expansion, while other segments like makeup and face care also played a role. The United States remains the largest buyer of French cosmetics, with a significant boost in perfume sales driving the market.

Perfumes Propel French Export Surge

The perfume segment has been instrumental in driving the overall export growth for French cosmetics. Accounting for nearly 35% of total exports, perfumes saw a substantial increase of almost one billion euros, reaching 8 billion euros in 2024. This surge was observed across all regions, reflecting the global appeal of French fragrances. Over the past five years, perfume exports have more than doubled, underscoring their pivotal role in the industry's success.

French perfumes have established themselves as a cornerstone of the country’s cosmetic exports. The category's impressive performance is evident from its consistent growth, which has not only maintained but also expanded its market share. In 2024, perfume sales surged by 13.6%, driven by strong demand in key markets such as the United States and Europe. This growth can be attributed to several factors, including brand loyalty, innovation in fragrance formulations, and strategic marketing efforts that have resonated with consumers worldwide. Moreover, the rise of luxury and niche perfumes has contributed to this upward trend, attracting both new and existing customers.

Global Market Dynamics Shape Export Trends

Beyond perfumes, other segments within the French cosmetics industry have experienced varying levels of growth. Makeup and face care products, despite a modest 2.3% increase, remain the largest category, contributing 11 billion euros to total exports. Hair products also showed promising growth, rising by 9.6%. However, the decline in Chinese demand has impacted overall sales, particularly in categories outside of perfumes.

The United States stands out as the primary trading partner for French cosmetics, accounting for 12.6% of total exports. The U.S. market saw a remarkable 17.6% growth in 2024, adding 427 million euros to its value. Perfumes were the main driver, making up 52.4% of exports to the U.S., highlighting the enduring popularity of French fragrances. European countries, including Germany, Spain, and Italy, continue to play a crucial role, with the EU collectively importing 9.1 billion euros worth of French cosmetics. Meanwhile, exports to China fell by 8.9%, signaling a shift in consumer preferences towards local and Asian brands. Despite these challenges, the French cosmetics industry remains optimistic, focusing on maintaining competitiveness in an increasingly globalized market.
