In an effort to combat food insecurity during the summer break, Evergreen Public Schools has introduced a program providing complimentary meals to children. This initiative aims to support families by offering breakfast and lunch to all children aged 1 to 18, irrespective of their enrollment in district schools. The project is fully supported by federal funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Various locations across Vancouver will host these meal services throughout the summer. At Marion Elementary and Silver Star Elementary, free meals are available from June 13 to June 20, with slight differences in timing between the two sites. Meanwhile, Image Elementary and Legacy High School serve as venues for the latter part of the summer, from July 14 to August 1. Cascadia Tech also participates, hosting the program from June 23 to July 12. Each site operates on weekdays, with specific hours tailored to accommodate different schedules.

This program exemplifies the importance of community collaboration to ensure that every child receives proper nutrition even outside of regular school terms. By addressing nutritional needs, it not only supports physical health but also enhances academic readiness when the new school year begins. Moreover, recognizing holidays such as Juneteenth and Independence Day reflects respect for cultural observances, reinforcing values of inclusivity and understanding within the local community.
