British fighter Liam Walsh has expressed a strong desire for Gervonta "Tank" Davis to engage in significant fights before his potential retirement. This call comes as Davis prepares for his WBA lightweight championship fight with Lamont Roach on March 1 and has announced his intention to retire after 2025.
Walsh's Plea for Davis' Future Fights
Walsh's Past Loss to Davis and His Desire for Big Fights
In 2017, Walsh faced Davis and suffered a defeat in just three rounds. Since then, he has been keen to see Davis take on the best 135-pound fighters. "Tank came out the other day and said he’s gonna retire after 2025. Will that happen? We don’t know but I’d like to see Tank fight Lomachenko. Teofimo is probably too big now but I want some of the big fights," Walsh told Pro Boxing Fans. He believes that Davis' victory over Ryan Garcia was a significant business move that enhanced his standing, but he still yearns for the big matchups like Tank-Loma or Tank-Shakur.Opportunity for a Tank-Lomachenko Fight
Davis was close to fighting IBF 135-pound titlist Lomachenko in November, but the fight fell through as the Ukrainian decided to spend time with his family. Walsh, however, remains optimistic that the fight can still happen next year. "I’m more interested in Tank-Lomachenko. I’m being honest. I got excited when I heard that one. And for whatever reasons, from what I’m reading, which we don’t know, it wasn’t Tank’s fault, but the fight didn’t go ahead. I hope it does happen," he said. He also questions Davis' ambition and whether he still holds the desire to be an undisputed champion.Anticipation of a Davis-Stevenson Encounter
When it comes to fighting Shakur Stevenson, Walsh believes it will be a top-class encounter. "I think Shakur could beat anybody. I think Shakur is good. I like him a lot. I think he’s brilliant," he said. He anticipates that Davis will face one of the sport's best opponents in Stevenson and expects a thrilling fight.Bernard Neequaye is a sports journalist with a specialty in boxing coverage.
