Chef Ting's love for food and cooking began at a tender age, with her first dinner party at just 7 years old. However, her mother had different plans for her, believing that her daughter's gifts should be directed towards more "substantial" pursuits. Undeterred, Chef Ting continued to nurture her culinary passion, even as she embarked on a successful career in corporate strategy and organizational development.

Diverse Experiences, Unified Purpose

Prior to her 25-year tenure as a corporate strategist, Chef Ting's path was marked by a remarkable array of experiences. She attended Georgetown Medical School, worked in the foreign service in Africa, and even started a nonprofit during the Clinton administration. Yet, throughout these diverse endeavors, her connection to food remained a constant, a thread that wove through the tapestry of her life.

Embracing the Soul's Calling

Chef Ting's former career, while successful, never truly fulfilled her deepest desires. She describes herself as someone with "extraordinary sensory realities," for whom the world often didn't make sense in the confines of corporate logistics and timelines. Manifesting a Dream: Black Joy and Black Joy Food Love

Alongside her business partner, Melissa Bradley, Chef Ting has brought her dreams to life on multiple fronts. Three years ago, they launched Black Joy, a sabbatical rest and restoration space for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) leaders. Simultaneously, Chef Ting began Black Joy Food Love, a culinary venture that enables and encourages people to nourish their bodies with vibrant, living food options.

Carving a Culinary Space on Martha's Vineyard

Chef Ting's journey has led her to the idyllic shores of Martha's Vineyard, a place she has long cherished as a "portal" of energy and possibility. After initially being hosted by fellow chefs on the island, Chef Ting and Melissa Bradley have now secured a commercial kitchen space in Oak Bluffs, which will serve as a hub for their culinary endeavors and a platform for other BIPOC chefs to thrive.

Envisioning a Culinary Community Hub

The new commercial kitchen space in Oak Bluffs is just the beginning of Chef Ting's ambitious plans. She envisions transforming the location into a restaurant that will showcase the diverse culinary traditions of the Black diaspora, with rotating chefs serving up flavors from Louisiana, Kenya, Ghana, Guyana, and beyond. Additionally, the space will host "Family Meal Fridays," where Island families can enjoy a pay-what-you-wish buffet-style meal, addressing the issue of food insecurity in the community.
