The Food Bank's Annual GiveThanks Thanksgiving Turkey Drive in Bulloch County

As Bulloch County emerges from a challenging hurricane season, the Food Bank, Inc. is gearing up for the upcoming holidays with their much-anticipated GiveThanks Thanksgiving Turkey Drive. This initiative aims to bring the joy of a Thanksgiving meal to 200 families this year. Sheila Stewart-Leach, the Executive Director, shares the heartwarming goal. A local anonymous organization has joined forces with them, enabling an increase of 50 families compared to last year. A mere $40 donation is sufficient to cover the costs of providing this holiday feast for their clients. Donations can be conveniently dropped off at their new location on Miller St. and Northside Drive, mailed to P.O. Box 543, Statesboro, GA 30459, or made online by texting TURKEYS24 to 53-555.

How the Food Bank Operates

Stewart-Leach explains that Food Bank clients receive food for free. The Food Bank purchases these foods from providers like Second Harvest and Sysco. However, during challenging times like Tropical Storm Debby and Hurricane Helene, when Second Harvest couldn't deliver, she took it upon herself to start shopping at grocery stores as early as 6:00 am to stock their shelves. In addition to purchasing food, the Food Bank, Inc. welcomes donations from local grocery stores such as Aldi, Food World, and both Walmart stores. Panera Bread and Starbucks also contribute bread and pastry items. Schools, organizations, and individuals from the area also play a vital role in donating food items.

The local community's support is truly remarkable. It shows the spirit of unity and helping one another during difficult times. The Food Bank, Inc. is not only about providing food but also about improving the health and well-being of the community through access to healthy and nutritious foods, nutritional education, and advocacy.

With a wonderful new (almost finished) building and a supportive community committed to helping their neighbors, the Food Bank is on the path to recovery from the recent storms. The people they serve are often in tough situations, and being able to assist them during these times is a source of great pride for the organization.

Partnerships and Donation Avenues

The partnership with the local anonymous organization has been a game-changer. It has allowed the Food Bank to expand their reach and provide more families with a Thanksgiving meal. The various donation options make it convenient for people to contribute. Dropping off donations at the new location gives donors a chance to see firsthand the impact of their generosity. Mailing donations ensures that even those who are unable to visit in person can still make a difference. And the online donation option through texting is a modern and accessible way for people to support the cause.

Local grocery stores' contributions are crucial. Aldi, Food World, and Walmart stores, along with Panera Bread and Starbucks, all play a significant role in ensuring that there is enough food to go around. Their donations add variety and ensure that families receive a well-rounded Thanksgiving meal.

Schools, organizations, and individuals also come together to make a difference. Their donations show that hunger is not a problem that can be solved by one entity alone. It takes a collective effort to eliminate hunger and improve the lives of those in need.

The Mission and Impact

The mission of The Food Bank, Inc. is clear - to eliminate hunger and enhance the health and well-being of the community. Through their efforts, they are making a tangible impact on the lives of countless individuals and families. By providing access to healthy and nutritious foods, they are helping to address a fundamental need. Nutritional education is another important aspect of their work, as it empowers people to make better choices about their diet.

Advocacy is also a key part of their mission. By raising awareness about hunger and the work they do, they are able to garner more support and resources. Their 501c3 status ensures that donations are tax-deductible, making it even more appealing for people to contribute.
