History and Purpose of Follies
Follies have been an integral part of Oklahoma State University for years. These singing and dancing-themed shows are specifically designed to welcome new members. Each show features a cast of 30 performers, consisting of sorority and fraternity member pairings, along with a group of directors who shape the performances. The competition is organized by the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Affairs and takes place in the Student Union Theater. This tradition creates a sense of community and allows new members to feel a part of something special. It provides an opportunity for them to express their artistic interests and make a meaningful impact.Fundraising and Its Impact
The funds raised through Follies support the SHS performing arts program in numerous ways. It enables the purchase of new equipment, renovation of facilities, and provides students with opportunities to explore their artistic talents. This financial support is crucial for the growth and development of the performing arts program. As Sierra Sewell, a graduate assistant in the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Affairs, mentioned, "It's a philanthropic show funded by the energy and commitment of our fraternity and sorority affairs community. It creates a meaningful and impactful experience for our new members to keep them in and continuously give back to our community."Themes and Creativity
This year's Follies theme was "Legends of the '80s," selected by Sewell and her executive team. The music and vibrance of the '80s era inspired the cast members to be creative and utilize their assigned legends, such as Madonna or Michael Jackson. They created a memorial for these artists and the impact they had on the music industry. The shows run for only eight minutes but include three to 10 songs. The cast members cut their music creatively to create a continuous track for their singing and dancing. This showcases their talent and ability to work together within a short time frame.Community Building and Support
Follies not only focuses on entertainment but also teaches new fraternity and sorority members how to invest in their communities. By forming friendships with their fellow cast members and directors, these students gain a support network that helps them achieve their goals in their first year.Kevin Zamborsky, the SHS Director of Bands, expressed his gratitude for the partnership. "We are incredibly thankful for the support of OSU Follies. Through their contributions, we have been able to create amazing experiences for our students and provide them with scholarship opportunities and new equipment."This sense of community is vital for building meaningful relationships within Greek life and shows students the importance of coming together to serve a purpose greater than themselves.
