As the trooper activated his cruiser's lights, a man jumped from the passenger window of the Dodge and into the Honda, which then sped away. The trooper drew his weapon and ordered the suspect to stop, but the Honda continued its escape, leading to a pursuit.The Honda eventually came to a stop on the far-left lane of the bridge, and two men jumped off the bridge, disappearing from sight. One of the men, later identified as 21-year-old Dekayo Patterson, managed to land on a support beam, finding himself trapped in a precarious position high above the water below.

Firefighter Aaron Buchanan, who rappelled down to reach Patterson, described the harrowing conditions he faced. Navigating a one-foot-wide beam while hovering 70 feet above the water, Buchanan had to exercise extreme caution and skill to safely retrieve the suspect."He was just asking for help, begging for help, he was terrified," Buchanan recounted, highlighting the desperation of the situation.
