Square Enix has adjusted the release schedule for the highly anticipated Evercold expansion of its popular MMORPG, Final Fantasy XIV. Producer Naoki Yoshida confirmed at Fan Fest Tokyo that the expansion's launch, initially planned for late January, will be pushed back by three weeks. The revised dates set early access for February 19, with the complete launch on February 23. Enthusiasts can mark their calendars for November 4, when pre-orders become available.
Yoshida emphasized that this minor postponement is a strategic move to uphold the game's quality standards. He stated that while the core elements of the expansion were progressing well, additional time was deemed necessary to fully deliver on the extensive promises made to the player community. This dedication to refinement underscores the development team's commitment to providing a polished and engaging experience as the launch date approaches.
The need for this extra development period is understandable given the ambitious scope of Evercold. The expansion is set to introduce a host of innovative features that will significantly evolve the Final Fantasy XIV gameplay. Among these is a more flexible progression system for main story quests, allowing players greater freedom in how they approach questlines rather than adhering to a strict linear path. Furthermore, an auto-balance adjustment system will be implemented to dynamically scale enemy levels and duty difficulty, ensuring a fair and challenging experience for all players, regardless of their individual levels within a party.
Another notable change in Evercold is the shift in FFXIV's progression from a daily to a weekly structure. This modification is designed to offer players more flexibility, mitigating the pressure to log in every day to avoid missing out on content. It will even allow players to retroactively earn reward points from previous weeks if they were unable to complete them. The expansion also ushers in the 'Evolved' combat style, a streamlined approach to battles that is currently being fine-tuned for all jobs and role actions outside of Evercold. Square Enix plans to host a dedicated Live Letter broadcast to provide an in-depth look at how the Evolved mode will function prior to the expansion's release.
Given the extensive new features and system overhauls, ensuring a smooth and bug-free launch is paramount. Players who wish to partake in the early access period will need an active subscription, a pre-order of Evercold, and to have registered their pre-order bonus code before the early access commencement date.
