For individuals like David Nagel, who has been living at the Water Street Mission for a year, the shelter has been a lifeline. Before finding refuge at the mission, Nagel would often bounce from one church to another, struggling to secure a consistent source of meals. "I never had three meals a day. They weren't in one place you can count on," he recounts, underscoring the profound impact that the mission's comprehensive meal program has had on his life.

Catering to Diverse Culinary Preferences

The Water Street Mission's food drive is not just about collecting donations; it's about ensuring that the meals provided cater to the diverse culinary preferences of their guests. "We try to create meals from all over the world. So, we can meet everyone's expectations and touch something from everyone's background. So, it means a touch of home, it means food security," explains Terence Reed, the executive chef at the mission.

The mission's meal program serves a dual purpose – not only does it provide sustenance, but it also creates a safe space for individuals to connect with one another, as well as with life coaches and case managers. "These meals are a way for people to come in and just find a little bit of peace. It provides a safe place for them to just start to connect with other people, life coaches, with case managers," says Matt Clement, the director of marketing at the Water Street Mission.

Overcoming Challenges and Relying on Community Support

The shelter's food drive is not without its challenges, as the mission fell short of its donation goal last year. "When we don't hit that goal, we have to depend on our neighbors and community members. So, it gets a little tough all around for everybody. But we will make it with help," acknowledges Reed.
