In a heartwarming display of community spirit, students at Northwestern Michigan College (NMC) have once again spearheaded the Thanks-for-Giving food drive, a cherished tradition that has been making a difference for over a decade. This annual initiative, led by the BUS 231 Professional Communications course, aims to provide much-needed sustenance to those facing food insecurity, ensuring that no one is left behind during the holiday season.

The Thanks-for-Giving food drive has become a beloved tradition at NMC, with students eagerly anticipating the opportunity to make a tangible impact on their community. This year's fundraiser, which kicked off on October 23 and will run until November 23, is poised to be the most successful yet, with a goal of providing 150-200 meal boxes to those in need. The drive's organizers have forged a partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters, ensuring that 50 of these meal boxes will be distributed to families identified by the organization, further expanding the reach of their efforts.

Innovative Fundraising Strategies

To facilitate the collection of donations, the BUS 231 students have devised a multifaceted approach. The first avenue is a straightforward monetary contribution, with donors able to visit the NMC website, input their desired amount, and designate their gift to the "Thanks-for-Giving" initiative. Those who contribute more than $10 will be entered into a drawing, with enticing prizes up for grabs, including a $250 gift card, a one-night stay at the Great Wolf Lodge, a one-night stay at the Delamar, a gift basket from Cheese Lady, and a $50 gift certificate to NMC's own Café Lobdell's.In addition to monetary donations, the students are also accepting donations of canned sweet potatoes (29-ounce cans only) and boxes of granola bars. These items can be dropped off in the red bins located at the Timothy J. Nelson Innovation Center until November 23. To further engage the community, the organizers have planned a glow skate event at Howe Arena on November 8, where a $10 entry fee and a $5 rental fee will be collected, with the proceeds going towards the food drive.

As the food drive nears its conclusion, the BUS 231 students are gearing up for the final phase of their efforts. On November 24, they will begin packing the meal boxes, with distribution to the identified families taking place the following day.
