The suspect, who has not been identified, fled the scene in a car, driving northbound on the sidewalk and then turning eastbound onto Broadwater.

A second officer, responding from the south on 29th Street, spotted the suspect's car on the sidewalk and activated their lights to give chase. Lieutenant Matt Lennick of the Billings Police Department stated, "He was multiple blocks behind the suspect who was traveling at a high rate of speed eastbound."

As the suspect drove into the intersection of 24th and Broadwater, they ran a red light and collided with another vehicle. At the time of the collision, the pursuing BPD officer was approximately in the 2600 block of Broadwater, still 2-3 blocks behind the suspect.
