A new generation of Florida A&M football players is making strides toward professional careers in American football. Recently, a group of 14 former Rattlers showcased their talents during the university's annual Pro Day event held on Ken Riley Field at Bragg Memorial Stadium. The occasion attracted representatives from twelve National Football League (NFL) teams as well as two Canadian Football League (CFL) franchises, BC Lions and Winnipeg Blue Bombers. According to FAMU head coach James Colzie III, these athletes have consistently demonstrated excellence both on and off the field. "They've contributed significantly to our successes, earning victories and completing their degrees," he remarked. "This opportunity allows them to demonstrate their potential before some of the most respected evaluators in the sport."

Florida A&M University has emerged as a prominent source of NFL talent over recent years. Currently, four FAMU alumni are active in the NFL, including Markquese Bell with the Dallas Cowboys, Terrell Jennings playing for the New England Patriots, Isaiah Land representing the Indianapolis Colts, and Xavier Smith signed by the Los Angeles Rams. Jennings himself attended Thursday’s event to support his former teammates. Coach Colzie praised the influence of past players who have paved the way for current prospects, noting that it serves as an excellent recruitment tool for aspiring student-athletes. He emphasized that FAMU provides a pathway not only to graduation but also to lucrative opportunities in professional sports.

The journey towards achieving such goals involves rigorous preparation and participation in various pre-draft events. For instance, earlier this year, five FAMU players participated in the HBCU NFL Combine and competed in the HBCU Legacy Bowl, a prestigious all-star game featuring top draft-eligible players from historically Black colleges. Quarterback Daniel Richardson excelled at the combine, earning recognition as Offensive Most Valuable Player. At Pro Day, Richardson displayed significant improvements in his physical condition, crediting consistent cardio workouts for shedding over 20 pounds since his last collegiate game. His performance included an impressive 4.68-second 40-yard dash. Cornerback Kendall Bohler, another standout participant, achieved notable results with a vertical leap of 35 inches and a swift 4.63-second sprint. These achievements reflect months of dedicated training since January.

The upcoming NFL Draft scheduled from April 24 to 26 offers immense promise for these athletes. Many FAMU players have already engaged in meetings with numerous NFL teams, while others remain open to CFL opportunities. Bohler expressed confidence in his progress throughout the pre-draft process, stating, "It feels rewarding knowing I've elevated my standing through hard work." As dreams unfold, the spirit of perseverance and faith fuels each player's aspirations. Tight end Jeremiah Pruitte celebrated his 24th birthday alongside Pro Day, finding divine significance in the timing. Running back Kelvin Dean Jr., hailing from Tallahassee, envisions becoming the next local star drafted into the NFL, following in the footsteps of Terrion Arnold, selected by the Detroit Lions last year. Their collective efforts underscore the importance of resilience, determination, and community pride in advancing toward greatness.
