Today, we take a deep dive into the lives and thoughts of high school student-athletes in the Austin area. Our focus is on Emy Chen, a senior guard from McCallum who has an interesting past - she spent six years hula dancing in elementary school. Let's explore more about her.

All about Emy: Hula Dancing and Old Friends

Elementary School Hula Dancing

Emy Chen's hula dancing journey began in elementary school and lasted for about six years. She participated in various competitions, performances, and even the local parade. This unique experience has left a lasting mark on her.

Spending Time with Old Friends

This summer, Emy took a memorable road trip to Galveston with (former teammates) Sam Cowles, Esme Barraz, and Sam Shreves. All three of them graduated last year, and this time together made her realize how much she'll miss them. It also reminded her of the precious memories they created in the past two years.

Dream Superhero: Doctor Strange

If Emy could be any superhero, she would choose Doctor Strange. The ability to turn back time and manipulate it using telekinesis is truly fascinating to her. She imagines being able to put the ball in the basket every time with such powers.

Valedictorian or All-State in Basketball

When faced with the choice between being valedictorian of her class or all-state in basketball, Emy chose the latter. With thousands of valedictorians in Texas and only 20 players for all-state in each division, being one of the best in the state is an incredible honor.

Caveman's Fascination with Modern Technology

If a caveman lived in modern times, Emy thinks he would be most fascinated by technology, especially smartphones and computers. The idea that a small device can connect you to the entire world and provide instant communication and access to knowledge would seem magical to a caveman.

Playoff Revenge against East View

Emy's favorite memory of playing basketball at McCallum is the bus ride home after beating East View last year in the bi-district. They had lost to East View the previous year and were determined to get revenge. The energy on the bus was electric, and this victory was special as it was for the seniors of that year.

Basketball's Lessons in Daily Life

Basketball has taught Emy that teamwork is not just about playing together. It requires trust and understanding that each person is crucial to the team's success. The best teams communicate, celebrate victories, and push through tough moments together.

Dream Dinner with Human Rights Leader

If Emy could have dinner with four people in history, she would choose (late civil rights activist) Yuri Kochiyama and her grandparents. She deeply admires Yuri Kochiyama's activism and commitment to solidarity. She would want the meal to be cooked by her grandpa as his food is the best and what she misses most in Texas. Our other Austin-area basketball player interview with Westlake F Jack Seiders also provides valuable insights into the world of high school basketball.
