Explosive Encounter: Des Moines Man Arrested for Targeting Ex-Roommate's Car

In a shocking turn of events, a Des Moines man has been arrested and charged with arson and possession of an explosive device after allegedly damaging his ex-roommate's car in a targeted incident, according to the Des Moines Police Department.

Responding to the Fiery Incident

The Des Moines Police Department and the Des Moines Fire Department were called to the 1200 block of Hartford Avenue on Tuesday morning at around 5:15 a.m. to investigate a report of a vehicle fire. While the car was not actively on fire, investigators found debris at the scene consistent with an improvised explosive device and damage to the vehicle consistent with an explosion.

Identifying the Suspect and Gathering Evidence

The Police Department's bomb squad, arson investigators, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives responded to the scene to question witnesses and the owner of the car. Through their investigation, they determined that the suspects had specifically targeted the vehicle.

Linking the Suspect to the Crime

Investigators allege that the owner of the car and one of the suspects, identified as Daniel Kashgen Hellmers, 33, knew each other, and evidence indicates that Hellmers targeted the vehicle. Later, Hellmers was located driving on Interstate 35 at Oralabor Road in Ankeny and was subsequently arrested.

Charges and Additional Discoveries

Hellmers was charged with arson, possession of an incendiary or explosive device with intent, possession of methamphetamine, failure to affix a drug tax stamp, and felon in possession of a firearm. During a search of Hellmers' house, a handgun and methamphetamine were allegedly found.
