The University of Minnesota's National Center for Gender Spectrum Health (NCGSH) has launched an innovative study aimed at fostering conversations about gender and bodies through interactive play. This initiative, which offers financial compensation to participating families, seeks to provide valuable insights into how children perceive and express their gender identities.

Pioneering Tools for Gender Exploration

The NCGSH is introducing a novel therapeutic tool known as MyGender Dolls. These dolls, crafted by transgender and gender-diverse artists, feature diverse representations of age, shape, and skin color, ensuring that all children can see themselves reflected in the toys they play with. Each doll comes with over 100 different clothing, accessory, and hair options, allowing kids to explore self-expression in ways that resonate deeply with their personal identities. The design of these dolls extends beyond aesthetics; they also include internal sex organs and external genitals, creating a comprehensive educational resource for young children and adolescents. The intention behind this tool is to facilitate meaningful discussions about gender and bodies in a safe and supportive environment. By engaging with these dolls under the guidance of a gender-competent therapist, children can better understand and articulate their own experiences.

Fostering Inclusive Dialogue Through Community Engagement

To ensure the success of this project, the NCGSH has invited families with transgender and gender-diverse children aged 5 to 10 to participate in group sessions. During these meetings, children and parents will collaborate to provide feedback on the MyGender Dolls and suggest improvements. The university has committed to compensating participants between $20 and $60 per session, recognizing the value of their contributions to this important research.Moreover, the NCGSH has organized a fundraising campaign to support the development and distribution of MyGender Dolls. Every dollar donated is matched by two members of the Human Sexuality Leadership Council, amplifying the impact of each contribution.
