A lunar mission has begun its scientific exploration after a successful landing on the moon. While Athena lander from Intuitive Machines encountered issues during descent, Blue Ghost remains operational, with potential support coming from Japan's Resilience spacecraft later this year. This sophisticated instrument investigates heat flow from the moon's core, even though it lacks Earth-like tectonics. Footage of the drilling process highlights the mission's progress. The LISTER payload represents a significant advancement in lunar exploration technology. It employs pneumatic, gas-powered drilling mechanisms developed collaboratively by Texas Tech University and Honeybee Robotics. Positioned beneath Blue Ghost's lower deck, LISTER drills into the moon's surface, generating dust and small particles visible in recent footage released by Firefly Aerospace. Its primary objective involves measuring heat emanating from the moon's interior, providing valuable data about the planetoid's internal warmth despite the absence of plate tectonics akin to Earth's.

Unveiling Lunar Thermal Evolution

Through its advanced drilling capabilities, Blue Ghost contributes crucial information regarding the moon's thermal properties. The mission focuses on assessing both temperature variations at different depths and the thermal conductivity of materials beneath the lunar surface. LISTER's probe pauses every half-meter while drilling up to three meters deep, gathering comprehensive data points.
