Expanding Its Reach: The Islamic Food Bank Foundation Tackles Growing Hunger Needs

The Islamic Food Bank Foundation is undergoing a significant transformation to address the escalating demand for food assistance. In response to rising grocery prices, this organization has experienced an unprecedented surge in requests for support. Lauren Bacans-Grounds, the program manager, highlighted that before the pandemic, they were serving 2,000 families annually. Now, they assist the same number of families each month. This dramatic increase has prompted the foundation to reevaluate its structure and mission.

To better serve the community, the Islamic Food Bank has separated from The Foundation of the Islamic Center, becoming its own entity. Jameel Burkett, the program chairman, explained that by focusing solely on food assistance, they can dedicate more resources and attention to combating hunger. The foundation aims to provide aid regardless of race, religion, or affiliation, ensuring that everyone in the greater Toledo area receives the necessary support. Volunteers have played a crucial role in expanding services and identifying gaps within the local food security system. Bacans-Grounds noted that their programs blossomed during the pandemic, despite operating without employees until July 2023.

Other organizations in the region are also witnessing a critical need for food assistance. Erin Tupper from the United Way of Greater Toledo emphasized the scarcity of resources and the importance of community support. People facing difficulties can seek help through various channels, including calling or texting 2-1-1 for assistance with reducing grocery bills or finding appropriate resources. The Islamic Food Bank Foundation encourages individuals to contribute as volunteers or donors to bolster their efforts in fighting hunger and supporting those in need.
