Esports Course Boosts Student Engagement and Confidence

A pioneering esports program at a Bournemouth-based academy is transforming the educational journey for students with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). At Iford Academy, where learners have diverse requirements, this innovative Level 2 BTec qualification in esports has proven to be a game-changer. The course, equivalent to a GCSE, has recently been completed by its inaugural group of participants. Principal Joe Phillips noted that engaging these students can often present challenges due to previous negative experiences within traditional school settings.

The curriculum design focuses on blending theoretical knowledge with practical gaming sessions. Each lesson spans approximately an hour, during which students delve into the business aspects of esports tournaments and marketing strategies, followed by collaborative gaming activities. Assessment involves research projects and presentations on relevant topics. Adrian, an enthusiastic gamer who participated in the course, remarked that it has made schooling enjoyable while enhancing his English skills through improved punctuation during computer-based tasks. Course instructor Alex Allen expressed delight in teaching a subject he's passionate about, stating pride in witnessing the perseverance and growth of the Year 11 cohort.

As esports continues to expand globally, attracting millions of participants and viewers alongside significant brand investments, the potential career pathways highlighted by the BTec course are substantial. However, the primary goal of the academy remains fostering self-assurance among students so they recognize their ability to elevate personal aspirations.
