Square Enix has declared that its mobile game, Final Fantasy 7: Ever Crisis, will cease operations on October 6, 2026. Debuting in 2023, the game's lifespan will span just over three years. This announcement positions Ever Crisis among a rising number of Square Enix's mobile ventures that have been retired in recent times.
In an official statement released on the game's website, Square Enix conveyed regret regarding the discontinuation, acknowledging the potential disappointment among its player base. The company noted its sustained efforts to deliver a high-quality experience since the game's inception but ultimately concluded that maintaining such standards would become increasingly challenging. Prior to the service termination, players retain the ability to utilize Red Crystals, the in-game currency. However, only residents of Taiwan will be eligible for refunds on any unspent Red Crystals acquired with real money.
Distinct from the high-budget remake trilogy currently in development by Square Enix, Ever Crisis offered a unique reinterpretation of Final Fantasy 7. Through regular updates, the mobile title progressively integrated storylines from the extensive Final Fantasy 7 universe, encompassing beloved entries such as Dirge of Cerberus and Advent Children. This comprehensive approach allowed players to immerse themselves in the entirety of the Compilation of Final Fantasy 7 within a single platform.
Notably, the only installment yet to be adapted by Ever Crisis was the less-known mobile game Before Crisis, which itself was decommissioned in 2018. Coinciding with the service termination announcement, producer Shoichi Ichikawa confirmed in a letter that Before Crisis would finally be incorporated into Ever Crisis. This new narrative content is slated for release in three distinct parts between July and August.
This move by Square Enix is not an isolated incident. The company previously shut down the servers for the mobile game Nier Reincarnation in 2024. Furthermore, Final Fantasy Brave Exvius and Dragon Quest of the Stars are scheduled for closure in 2025. However, Brave Exvius is set to receive a new lease on life later this year with the console port Final Fantasy Resonance, launching on October 22. Similarly, the mobile title Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent, which remains active, was adapted into the console game Octopath Traveler 0. While there has been no news regarding a console release for Nier Reincarnation, the possibility remains. This raises hopes that Ever Crisis might also experience a resurgence as a console game in the future.
The conclusion of Final Fantasy 7: Ever Crisis marks another chapter in the evolving landscape of mobile gaming for Square Enix. While the immediate future for Ever Crisis players involves the winding down of services, the company's track record of reimagining successful mobile titles for console platforms offers a glimmer of hope for fans that this rendition of the beloved Final Fantasy 7 saga may yet find new life beyond the mobile screen.
