In the heart of Washington's Tri-Cities area, a unique collaboration between educational institutions and financial organizations has emerged as a beacon of practical learning. For over two decades, Gesa Credit Union has been offering an innovative program that integrates real-world banking experience into high school curricula. This initiative not only addresses concerns about the relevance of school programs but also equips students with essential financial skills. By immersing students in hands-on banking operations, this program provides them with invaluable experience that prepares them for future careers in finance and beyond.

The program operates within Chiawana High School, where a dedicated branch of Gesa Credit Union has been established. Chanda Baie, a finance and marketing teacher at Chiawana, highlights the distinctiveness of this setup. "The branch is more than just a window; it's a fully functional space where students can engage in real banking activities," she explains. The facility offers students an authentic banking environment, allowing them to practice what they learn in class.

To participate in this immersive experience, students enroll in a specialized Banking and Financial Services course that spans one to three trimesters. Under the guidance of Mrs. Baie and Gesa staff, these young learners manage various aspects of the credit union’s daily operations. Tasks include opening accounts, processing transactions, and assisting fellow students with their financial needs. This practical exposure ensures that students gain a comprehensive understanding of banking processes.

Ruth Plaza, a student intern, shares her positive experience with the program. "When Ms. Baie introduced me to the idea of becoming a Gesa intern, I saw numerous opportunities. It has been an enriching journey, and I've committed to continuing my education at Washington State University while also pursuing another internship with Gesa." Ruth emphasizes the satisfaction she derives from working closely with her peers, teaching them essential banking skills, and engaging in hands-on activities.

This partnership between Gesa Credit Union and local schools exemplifies how practical education can empower students. By providing a platform for real-world learning, the program equips participants with the knowledge and confidence needed to succeed in the financial industry. Moreover, it fosters a deeper understanding of personal finance, setting a strong foundation for their future endeavors.
