In the heart of Yuma, Arizona, the winter lettuce capital of the world, a group of dedicated students from Northern Arizona University's (NAU) Yuma campus have embarked on a mission to support the unsung heroes of the agricultural industry – the farmworkers. Recognizing the challenges these hardworking individuals face, the students have launched a fundraising campaign to provide them with essential supplies, ensuring their well-being and dignity during the long hours in the fields.

Bridging the Gap: Providing Comfort and Nourishment for Farmworkers

Addressing the Needs of the Community

The idea for this initiative was born when a group of social work students at NAU's Yuma campus noticed farmworkers in their community carrying their lunches in simple plastic bags. Recognizing the need for more durable and practical solutions, the students decided to take action. Jocelyn Zaragoza and her three classmates started a GoFundMe page with the goal of purchasing as many lunch coolers as possible for the field workers."More heavy-duty bags so their food stays warm or it stays cold during the long hours that they're working. They do so much for us by providing us lettuce and vegetables. I think it's important that we give back to them," said Zaragoza, reflecting the students' desire to support the farmworkers who are the backbone of the region's agricultural industry.

Expanding the Scope of Support

The students' efforts extend beyond just providing lunch coolers. They are also looking to purchase sunscreen and ibuprofen to help the farmworkers cope with the demanding physical labor and exposure to the elements. Additionally, the NAU Flagstaff campus has donated beanies, gloves, and other warm essentials to be distributed at the annual Day of the Farmworker event in San Luis.This comprehensive approach to supporting the farmworkers' well-being demonstrates the students' understanding of the multifaceted challenges these individuals face. By addressing their basic needs for nourishment, protection, and comfort, the students are making a tangible difference in the lives of those who are often overlooked.

Fostering a Sense of Community and Giving Back

For Griselda Montiel, a student in the social work program, this initiative holds a personal connection. "My dad has always worked in the fields," she shared, recalling a time when her father attended the same resource fair. Now, Montiel is grateful for the opportunity to give back to her father's community, which she considers her own."It's kind of like giving back to him, and to his community because that's his community too," Montiel expressed, highlighting the deep sense of empathy and community that drives the students' efforts.

Reaching Out to the Farmworker Community

The students' plan is to distribute the donated items at the annual Day of the Farmworker event in San Luis, which is organized by the nonprofit Campesinos Sin Fronteras. This event, attended by approximately 2,000 farmworkers each year, provides a platform for the students to directly connect with the community they aim to serve.By participating in this event, the NAU Yuma students not only fulfill their mission of supporting the farmworkers but also foster a deeper understanding of the challenges and experiences of this vital workforce.
