This initiative, powered by an organization known as Reel Connections for Kids, aimed to provide underserved children from Bedford and Franklin Counties with unforgettable fishing experiences. The lake, originally established for energy production by Appalachian Power, now serves as a vibrant hub for community engagement and personal growth. Saturday morning saw a gathering at Goodhue Boat Co. – Blackwater, where participants came together not for competition but for connection, fostering relationships through shared adventures.

This non-profit endeavor highlights how simple pleasures can create profound impacts. At its core, fishing requires minimal tools—a rod, reel, bait, and access to water—but when enhanced with a boat, skilled captain, and enthusiastic volunteers, it transforms into something far more significant. Kevin Bugg, president of Reel Connections for Kids, emphasized the importance of creating lasting memories that inspire future generations to embrace this activity. Each child involved in the event received two fish to bring home, along with educational materials such as t-shirts, poles, tackle boxes, and lessons on water safety courtesy of Virginia’s Department of Wildlife Resources (DWR).

The day commenced early, around 6:30 a.m., and concluded approximately five hours later. Among the first to return was Captain John Mathena aboard his Patriot Fishing Charters vessel. Accompanying him were Greg Bratton and his sons, Hunter and Chase. Young Chase proudly claimed the title of catching the first fish of the day—a sizable striped bass—demonstrating both excitement and enthusiasm.
