In a remarkable display of resilience and community spirit, a Reynoldsburg food pantry has witnessed a staggering 12-fold increase in its customer base over the past five years. Recognizing the growing need, the organization is now embarking on an ambitious expansion project, not just to feed the hungry, but to help them flourish in life.Nourishing the Body, Empowering the Soul
Expanding Horizons, Enriching Lives
The Reynoldsburg-based HEART (Helping Eastside and Reynoldsburg Thrive) food pantry is undergoing a remarkable transformation. Driven by the surge in demand, the organization is nearly tripling its existing space, constructing a state-of-the-art, 11,790-square-foot facility on a 2-acre plot along East Main Street. This $3.2 million investment is more than just a physical expansion; it represents a holistic approach to addressing the multifaceted challenges faced by the community. The new pantry will not only provide ample space to serve a growing number of clients, but it will also offer a dedicated resource center to help individuals navigate the complexities of life. Executive Director Cheryl Wooten emphasizes the importance of this expanded approach, stating, "We want to make sure we have availability to really help somebody and have them sit down and tell us what's going on. We don't want this to be just hurry in, hurry out."Empowering Individuals, Strengthening the Community
The resource center will be a hub of support, offering a range of services to help clients move forward in their lives. From budgeting and financial literacy counseling to resume writing and job search assistance, the pantry aims to provide the necessary guidance and tools to help individuals become self-sufficient. Additionally, the center will help clients navigate the complex web of social services, ensuring they can access programs such as Medicare, Medicaid, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), and Ohio's publicly funded child care program. This holistic approach is a reflection of HEART's mission: "Nourish to Flourish." Wooten emphasizes that the pantry is committed to walking alongside its clients, not simply handing out food. "We're going to be here for as long as it takes that person to navigate through things. However, we're also going to see what you are willing to do to help move your life forward," she says. "We're not going to do it for you. We'll do it with you."Fostering a Sense of Community and Belonging
The new pantry will be designed to provide a welcoming and empowering experience for its clients. Inspired by the concept of a traditional grocery store, the space will feature different sections for produce, meat, refrigerated and frozen food, as well as aisles of non-perishable items. This approach gives clients the freedom to choose the items that best suit their families' needs, fostering a sense of dignity and ownership.Recognizing the growing diversity of the Reynoldsburg community, HEART is committed to ensuring that the pantry's offerings cater to the cultural preferences of its clients. From lentils and rice to other culturally significant items, the pantry aims to make everyone feel at home, regardless of their background.Rooted in Community, Fueled by Collaboration
The expansion of HEART's food pantry is not just a project for the organization; it is a community-driven endeavor. Wooten emphasizes the importance of community involvement, stating, "We really want the community to go 'That's ours' and feel free to volunteer and come in."To fund the $3.2 million construction project, HEART is utilizing a combination of grants and a comprehensive funding campaign. The organization is also actively seeking in-kind contributions, such as donations of HVAC equipment or volunteer labor for painting, to further strengthen the community's connection to the project.By fostering a sense of ownership and involvement, HEART aims to create a pantry that is truly rooted in the East Side and Reynoldsburg communities, ensuring that the expanded facility serves as a beacon of hope and empowerment for those in need.
