Ely, a picturesque town nestled in the heart of Minnesota, recently played host to a beloved annual event that brought together car enthusiasts, community members, and supporters of a meaningful scholarship fund. The 2024 Jake Forsman Memorial Car Show and Burnout Competition was a resounding success, drawing hundreds of spectators and showcasing an impressive array of vintage and modified vehicles.

Revving Up for a Cause: Ely's Automotive Extravaganza

Burnout Competition: Spinning Tires, Captivating Crowds

The burnout competition was the centerpiece of the event, attracting 19 participants in each of the morning and afternoon sessions. Spectators eagerly gathered around the barricades, eager to witness the impressive displays of automotive power and skill. The roar of engines and the smell of burning rubber filled the air, as drivers pushed their vehicles to the limit, creating mesmerizing "road art" on Chapman Street.

Car Show: A Showcase of Automotive Artistry

The car show portion of the event was more popular than ever, with a remarkable 114 cars entered. The variety of vehicles on display was truly impressive, ranging from classic American muscle cars to sleek modern sports cars. Visitors wandered through the rows of meticulously maintained and lovingly restored vehicles, admiring the craftsmanship and attention to detail that went into each one.

Community Generosity and Scholarship Support

The event was not just about the cars, but also about honoring the memory of Jake Forsman and supporting the educational aspirations of local students. Ely native Kael Richards, an electrical lineman and small business owner, offered a $250 bounty for the winner of the morning burnout session on behalf of Righteous Republic Clothing. Fenske Tree Service followed suit, providing the same award for the afternoon session. The overall burnout champion also received a beautiful lighted desktop sign from Pengal's Basswood Trading Company.

Celebrating Automotive Passion and Community Spirit

The weather was perfect for the event, with sunny skies and comfortable fall temperatures. The area around City Hall was transformed, with several blocks closed off to accommodate the car show and competition. The festive atmosphere was enhanced by the Ely Fire Department, which grilled burgers and hot dogs for the hungry attendees.

Honoring the Legacy: The Jake Forsman Memorial Scholarship

All proceeds from the event go to the Jake Forsman Memorial Scholarship Fund, which has awarded over $50,000 in scholarships to students pursuing careers in building and mechanical trades since the event's inception. Jake Forsman, who passed away in 2016, had shared a dream with his father of holding a similar event in Ely, and the community has embraced this legacy with open arms.

A Celebration of Community, Passion, and Giving

The 2024 Jake Forsman Memorial Car Show and Burnout Competition was a testament to the spirit of Ely's community. The event not only showcased the region's automotive enthusiasts but also highlighted the generosity and support that aligns with the mission of the Jake Forsman Memorial Scholarship. As event organizer and Ely council member Al Forsman stated, "Clearly, our community embraces the spirit of giving and support that aligns with the mission of the Jake Forsman Memorial Scholarship. We are truly grateful to be able to lead this work funding the education of our future workforce."
