Bengaluru: A 23-year-old businessman was arrested for allegedly using a fake MLC pass in the name of Congress lawmaker BK Hariprasad on his SUV. The accused is Sibgath UIlah Bukhari aka Bokari, a resident of Jayanagar and a fruit merchant. The SUV bearing registration number KA-05-NB-7900 has been seized and further investigation is on.
The arrest was made based on a complaint filed by Hariprasad’s personal assistant Avinash SB.
Avinash told TOI that on December 20, a person known to Hariprasad had forwarded a few photos of an SUV having the Karnataka legislative council pass with the MLC’s name on its front and back windshield. “Since the vehicle didn’t belong to Hariprasad we checked with the secretariat to know if a pass had been issued for the said vehicle. The secretariat replied that they hadn’t issued the pass to the SUV,” he said.
On December 29, Avinash filed a complaint with police stating that the person using the pass has no connection with Hariprasad and he is misusing the permit.
Police swung into action and nabbed Sibgath. A senior police officer said the pass on the vehicle was found to be fake. Sibgath claimed he had sourced a fake pass to avoid paying at toll gates. Vehicles sporting MLC passes are allowed to take the VVIP lane at all toll gates. Sibgath, however, is tight-lipped on why he chose to get a fake pass in Hariprasad’s name.
Sibgath later changed his claims and said he purchased the SUV from a person known to him almost a year ago and the pass was already on the vehicle and he was using it since then.
Police, however, said Sibgath had not only cheated Hariprasad but also the government by not paying toll charges. “Sibgath’s version is being verified,” a police officer said.
A case has been booked under IPC sections 419 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property), 420 (punishment for cheating by personation), 465 (forgery), 468 (forgery for purpose of cheating), and 471 (using forged documents).
