The company Eastman has recently achieved significant milestones in sustainability with its copolyester resins. Eight of these materials, including their recycled-content counterparts, have received approvals from RecyClass for recyclability. RecyClass is a European initiative dedicated to enhancing the recyclability and transparency of plastic products across industries. The certification indicates that six out of eight copolyesters are fully compatible with advanced recycling processes used for PET bottles in Europe, while two others show limited compatibility. This development opens new possibilities for brands looking to adopt circular solutions in packaging beyond beverages, such as cosmetics and personal care items.

These specialized polymers, often referred to as specialty PET, underwent rigorous independent testing by PTI-Europe and Plastics Forming Enterprises (PFE). The tests followed an adapted version of the Recyclability Evaluation Protocol for PET bottles. As a result, these materials have been confirmed not to interfere with existing recycling streams in Europe. This makes them ideal for non-beverage packaging applications like skincare jars, bottles, caps, and color cosmetics. The unique properties of these resins—such as lower crystallization rates compared to standard PET—contribute to enhanced durability, high transparency, and luster in final products.

Copolyesters are engineered through the modification of polyesters by introducing specific chemical compounds. For instance, adding isophthalic acid or cyclohexane dimethanol can alter the base polyester structure, resulting in materials that maintain their strength and clarity even when exposed to various chemicals. Eastman, a leading global manufacturer of copolyester resins, has long been at the forefront of developing innovative materials that support sustainable practices.

This certification marks an important step forward for Eastman and the broader plastics industry. By providing materials that do not disrupt established recycling processes, Eastman enables brands to create more sustainable packaging solutions. The approval underscores the company's commitment to advancing circular economy principles and offering environmentally friendly alternatives for a wide range of applications.
