Eastern Kentucky University Tennis Stars Honored for Academic Excellence

Six standout tennis players from Eastern Kentucky University have been recognized by the College Sports Communicators as part of the prestigious Academic All-District® Team. The announcement, made from Indiana on a recent Tuesday afternoon, highlights the exceptional academic achievements of these student-athletes. Representing the men's team are Kartik Parhar, Romeo Elfving Navarro, and Ryan Kitchin, while Masha Fedenko, Sasha Parkhomenko, and Zhansaya Bakytzhan were selected from the women's squad. To qualify for this honor, athletes must meet stringent criteria, including maintaining at least a 3.5 GPA and participating in a minimum of 70% of their team's competitions.

The accomplishments of the EKU men’s tennis team are particularly noteworthy. Ryan Kitchin, a senior hailing from Sydney, Australia, concluded his academic year with a perfect 4.0 GPA while majoring in business management. On the court, he contributed significantly to the team’s success with an overall record of 15-24, securing eight singles victories and seven doubles wins. Similarly, Romeo Elfving Navarro, a finance major, matched Kitchin’s flawless GPA. As a sophomore from Denmark, Navarro excelled both academically and athletically, achieving nine combined wins in doubles and singles matches, including three conference triumphs. Kartik Parhar, a junior from Ludhiana, India, also earned recognition with a commendable 3.85 GPA in sports management. Playing primarily on the back three courts, Parhar recorded nine individual victories during the season.

The women’s team also boasts remarkable talent and dedication. Zhansaya Bakytzhan, a sophomore from Kazakhstan, maintained a high 3.9 GPA while studying sports management. Her athletic contributions included six singles wins and five doubles victories from the third flight. Masha Fedenko, a junior from Ukraine, finished her studies with a solid 3.5 GPA, consistently playing on EKU’s top court throughout the season. Despite facing numerous challenges, she achieved an impressive 11-36 overall record across doubles and singles play. Additionally, Sasha Parkhomenko, another junior from Ukraine, upheld a 3.5 GPA while pursuing a degree in sports management. Known for her prowess on the second flight, Parkhomenko ranked second on the team with eight singles wins and fourth with seven doubles victories.

This recognition caps off a successful 2024-25 season for the EKU tennis program, which garnered eight postseason accolades. Fans eagerly await the upcoming fall schedule, expected to commence in early September, as the Colonels continue to build on their legacy of excellence both on and off the court.
