Connecting Parents with Essential Resources
The Dubuque Kids Expo served as a one-stop-shop for parents, offering them a chance to explore a diverse array of community organizations and the resources they provide. Abby Degenhardt, the Executive Director of Dubuque Early Childhood, emphasized the importance of such events, stating, "A lot of times you just don't know what resources are out there. So coming to an event like this where you're walking around and talking to community organizations that provide resources specifically for parents and families is incredible."The expo featured a wide range of services, including free oral health screenings and vaccinations. Traci Sweeney, a nurse from the Visiting Nurse Association, described the enthusiastic response from attendees, saying, "Kids are coming up here, getting their shots or get their lead test or you know whatever they're doing. Then they go down and have some fun downstairs and see all the services. I mean we've had multiple kids up here with balloons and necklaces, all the fun stuff."Prioritizing Preventive Healthcare for Children
The Dubuque Kids Expo also highlighted the importance of preventive healthcare for children, particularly when it comes to immunizations. Sweeney noted an increased interest in children receiving both the flu and COVID-19 vaccines, stating, "All the kids I've seen so far have got both the flu and covid. I think people are receptive that now it's a yearly thing and not a two or three dose series. They're coming every year to get it."This heightened interest can be attributed, in part, to a new state law aimed at reducing absenteeism in schools. Sweeney explained, "Whether it's excused or unexcused, they're getting a lot of germs at school so you want to get in and get that flu shot to give them some added protection."Fostering a Collaborative Community Approach
The Dubuque Kids Expo demonstrated the power of community collaboration in supporting families. Sweeney expressed her satisfaction with the event's turnout, saying, "It's been excellent, better than we expected. I've been doing a lot of immunizations. Even people just coming up and asking questions, we've been helpful to them."By bringing together various community organizations and service providers, the expo created a platform for parents to access a wealth of information and resources tailored to their children's needs. This collaborative approach empowers families to make informed decisions and ensures that no child is left behind in accessing the support they require.
