The data also highlights a concerning generational divide, with the proportion of drivers delaying maintenance being significantly higher among those under the age of 25. More than a third (36%) of this age group have admitted to ignoring repairs and letting servicing slide, putting themselves and others at greater risk.

The False Economy of Neglected Maintenance

The RAC's findings suggest that the perceived savings from neglecting vehicle maintenance may be a false economy. The report reveals that six-in-ten (59%) drivers have faced unexpected repair costs for their main vehicle over the past 12 months, with the average total amount spent on these repairs reaching an incredible £617. While some were able to cover these expenses comfortably, a significant proportion (37%) faced difficulties, a figure that rises to 45% among the under-25s.
