In the Year of the Dragon, a prominent Chinese client commissioned Rolls-Royce to create an exclusive one-off Phantom Extended. This unique vehicle showcases intricate dragon-themed artistry, symbolizing power, fortune, and cultural heritage. The design draws inspiration from ancient Chinese legends, featuring two dragons and a divine pearl, representing kindness and generosity. Crafted under the direction of Shuai Feng, Rolls-Royce's lead bespoke designer in Shanghai, this masterpiece harmoniously blends traditional Chinese motifs with modern automotive design. The exterior sports an Iced Diamond Black paint finish, while the interior boasts Ardent Red leather seats and elaborate marquetry. The Starlight Headliner features 1,344 fiber-optic lights, creating an abstract representation of the dragons.

The creation of this one-of-a-kind Rolls-Royce Phantom is rooted in an ancient Chinese legend that has captivated imaginations for over three millennia. According to the tale, two celestial dragons, guardians of humanity, were bestowed a divine pearl by the gods for their benevolent acts. Instead of claiming the treasure for themselves, they displayed remarkable humility and respect, leading the gods to bestow upon them a second pearl. This act of selflessness symbolizes the virtues of kindness and generosity, deeply ingrained in Chinese culture. As the dragons absorbed the pearls, they ascended to divinity, embodying the harmonious balance of Yin and Yang, which signifies enlightenment and fulfillment.

Shuai Feng, the lead bespoke designer at Rolls-Royce’s Shanghai Private Office, led the project with a vision to honor China’s revered symbols and the client’s personal iconography. The car, named the Phantom Dragon, was meticulously crafted to ensure that every element paid homage to both Chinese tradition and Rolls-Royce’s design philosophy. The exterior's Iced Diamond Black satin finish offers a subtle yet striking contrast, while the brightwork maintains the elegance expected of such a luxurious vehicle. Inside, the front seats are upholstered in Ardent Red leather, complemented by black rear seats. The Gallery, located atop the dashboard, houses a custom marquetry piece composed of 297 individual wood pieces, depicting the legendary dragons guarding the pearl.

The craftsmanship extends to the door panels and center console, where the same types of wood are used without additional dragon imagery. Embroidered headrests feature the owner’s family name in ancient Chinese calligraphy, adding a personal touch. The centerpiece, however, is undoubtedly the Starlight Headliner, which uses 1,344 fiber-optic lights to create an abstract representation of the dragons, complete with 24 shooting stars, enhancing the celestial theme.

This extraordinary vehicle not only celebrates the Year of the Dragon but also stands as a testament to the seamless integration of cultural symbolism and modern luxury. It reflects the client's success and personal philosophy while showcasing the unparalleled craftsmanship of Rolls-Royce. As we look forward to the Year of the Snake in 2025, it invites contemplation on how individuals might commemorate their zodiac signs through such magnificent creations. The Phantom Dragon exemplifies the perfect blend of tradition and innovation, making it a true masterpiece in automotive history.
