Empowering Students, Nourishing Futures: Pittsfield Middle High School's Student-Run Food Pantry

In the heart of New Hampshire, a remarkable initiative is transforming the lives of students at Pittsfield Middle High School. Driven by the compassion and dedication of their peers, a student-run food pantry is providing a lifeline to those in need, ensuring that no child goes hungry within the school's walls. This inspiring story showcases the power of community, the resilience of the human spirit, and the transformative impact that can be achieved when young minds come together to make a difference.

Fueling Success, One Meal at a Time

A Decade of Compassion

Pittsfield Middle High School's student-run food pantry has been a beacon of hope for nearly a decade, starting as a project for the school's National Honor Society Program. Over the years, this remarkable initiative has grown, with local organizations and volunteers collaborating to ensure the pantry remains well-stocked with a variety of essential items, from easy-to-prepare meals to basic toiletries.

Fostering a Supportive Community

The food pantry, located conveniently near the school's cafeteria, is open to all students in need. Each Friday afternoon, an announcement over the intercom invites anyone to line up and receive the supplies they require. In a school of approximately 270 students, around 50 of them regularly utilize the pantry's resources, a testament to the significant impact it has on the community.

Inspiring the Next Generation

The food pantry serves as a powerful example for younger students, who can look up to their older peers and witness the positive change they are creating. Melissa Brown, the assistant principal and advisor to the National Honor Society, beams with pride as she observes the students' dedication and the gratitude expressed by those they serve.

A Fulfilling Endeavor

For the student volunteers, the food pantry offers a deeply rewarding experience. Elise Berry, a senior and member of the Honor Society, finds immense joy in seeing the faces of those who receive the much-needed nourishment. "I try to be down there as much as I can because it really puts a smile on my face to see people getting what they need," she shares.

Fostering Gratitude and Understanding

Another senior, Annelisa Marcotte, notes that the experience of the food pantry extends beyond just providing resources. It also fosters a sense of community and understanding among the students. "They have a way to understand 'You're not the only one in this position. There are multiple people who are here, it's during the school day, it doesn't go out of your way, it doesn't take a ton of time, and you get the resources you need," Marcotte explains.

Promoting Awareness and Opportunity

The food pantry serves as a platform to raise awareness about the National Honor Society and encourage students to strive for academic excellence. By providing the necessary resources, the pantry empowers students to focus on their studies and reach their full potential, ultimately benefiting the entire school community.

A Unique and Praised Offering

Pittsfield Middle High School's student-run food pantry is a unique and highly praised initiative. Visitors often commend the school for this remarkable program, and Melissa Brown takes great pride in witnessing her students' dedication and the positive impact they are making.
