In an effort to promote early literacy and a lifelong love of books, Door County is hosting a special book giveaway event for families with young children. Organized by the United Way of Door County in collaboration with the Door County Library and the Door County Bookmobile, this initiative aims to distribute free reading materials to children aged 0-5. By offering a curated selection of age-appropriate books and introducing programs like Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, the event seeks to inspire curiosity and engagement in early childhood development.

A Celebration of Stories Across Door County

During a vibrant week dedicated to fostering young minds, the Door County Bookmobile temporarily shifts its focus from serving elementary school students to welcoming toddlers and infants. In various locations throughout the county, parents and guardians are invited to bring their little ones to explore a treasure trove of new books designed especially for younger audiences. This unique opportunity allows children under five to not only select books to keep but also enroll in the Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library program, which delivers monthly reading material directly to their homes.

The giveaway events will take place over two days, beginning on a sunny Tuesday morning at the Forestville Library and continuing through the afternoon at the Sturgeon Bay Library. On Wednesday, the excitement moves northward, stopping at the Sister Bay/Liberty Grove Library, Baileys Harbor Library, and finally concluding at the Egg Harbor Library. Families are encouraged to arrive early as books will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.

Each location offers a warm and inviting atmosphere where caregivers can connect with local librarians while sparking joy and wonder in their children through storytelling and interactive activities.

From the bustling streets of Sturgeon Bay to the serene settings of rural libraries, these stops reflect the community's commitment to nurturing the next generation of readers.

Here are the scheduled times:

  • Tuesday, June 24: 9:30–10:30 AM at Forestville Library (123 Hwy 42), followed by 11:15 AM–12:15 PM at Sturgeon Bay Library (107 S. 4th Ave.)
  • Wednesday, June 25: 10:30–11:30 AM at Sister Bay/Liberty Grove Library (2323 Mill Road); 12:15–1:15 PM at Baileys Harbor Library (2392 Cty F); and 1:45–2:45 PM at Egg Harbor Library (7845 Church St.)

This initiative exemplifies how partnerships between nonprofit organizations and public institutions can create meaningful opportunities for families.

Through this event, Door County demonstrates its dedication to supporting early childhood education and cultivating a love for learning that lasts a lifetime.

As a journalist covering this story, I am inspired by the collaborative spirit driving such initiatives. It highlights the importance of accessible resources in shaping young minds and fostering community bonds. For readers, it serves as a reminder of the transformative power of books and the value of investing in our youngest citizens’ futures. Initiatives like these remind us all that every child deserves the chance to discover the magic within the pages of a good book.
