The Greater Cleveland Urban Film Festival (GCUFF) is a vibrant celebration of diverse stories and perspectives, marking its 13th year of showcasing the rich tapestry of the local community. Inspired by the lack of representation at the Cleveland International Film Festival, the festival has become a platform for amplifying the voices and experiences of people of color, offering a unique lens through which to explore the joys, challenges, and triumphs that define their lives.

The Greater Cleveland Urban Film Festival has always been about more than just showcasing films. It's a testament to the transformative power of storytelling, a medium that has the ability to bridge divides, foster empathy, and celebrate the richness of diverse cultures. "We started with just an idea to be able to highlight more stories in our community because a lot of the things we see in public and in the media aren't really highlighting our community in the best light," explains GCUFF Executive Director Donna Dabbs. "We know our community is full of rich stories of joy and laughter and comedy and tragedy."

Fostering a Sense of Belonging

For many filmmakers, the GCUFF represents a homecoming of sorts, a chance to share their stories with the very communities that have shaped their experiences. Jasmine Brooks, a 21-year-old senior at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts, is one such filmmaker whose film "Heaven Nevaeh" has been accepted into the festival. "Not only is this like a pretty prestigious festival but for it to also be in my hometown, I get to come back and like show my film and share it with the people, honestly that like honestly it's about is really, really cool, I'm super, super blessed," she enthuses.

Reflecting the Diversity of the Community

The GCUFF's commitment to showcasing diverse stories extends beyond the screen, as the festival itself reflects the rich tapestry of the Greater Cleveland community. "We wanted to make something that was for people like me which is basically like Black people that grew up in mostly white communities and kind of go into what that feels like, what that can be like and communicating it in a way that everybody could understand," says Brooks, highlighting the festival's ability to resonate with a wide range of audiences.

The GCUFF is more than just a film festival; it's a gathering of like-minded individuals who share a passion for storytelling and a desire to celebrate the unique experiences of their community. "It was really inspired by my visit to the Cleveland International Film Festival because I didn't see enough people of color or films of color," Dabbs explains, underscoring the festival's role in creating a space where marginalized voices can be heard and celebrated.
