Disney's Lilo & Stitch Returns to Theaters with New Animated Short

A fresh animated short film, marking Disney's first theatrical short release in five years, is set to bring the beloved characters of "Lilo & Stitch" back to the big screen. This new adventure, titled "Lilo & Scratch," promises a dose of classic mayhem as it delves into the whimsical world of Lilo and her extraordinary pets.

Lilo & Stitch: A New Theatrical Journey Unfolds

At the prestigious Annecy Festival, Disney unveiled exciting news for fans of its 2002 animated classic, "Lilo & Stitch." The studio announced the upcoming release of a new animated short, "Lilo & Scratch," which will debut in theaters preceding the much-anticipated film "Hexed" on November 25th. This marks a significant moment, as it's Disney's first theatrical short in half a decade.

The creative team behind "Lilo & Scratch" boasts a blend of original talent and new collaborators. Chris Sanders, the original writer and director of "Lilo & Stitch," reprises his role as the voice of the mischievous alien, Stitch. Joining him is Maia Kealoha, who portrayed Lilo in the live-action remake, now lending her voice to the animated counterpart. Co-directors of "Hexed," Fawn Veerasunthorn and Jason Hand, contributed to the short's creation, alongside Alex Cooper Schmidt, an animator from the original film. Schmidt's expertise brought hand-drawn renditions of Stitch to life, complementing the short's blend of CG animation and watercolor backgrounds, crafted both traditionally and digitally.

During a panel discussion at Annecy, Veerasunthorn shared insights into the collaborative spirit that fueled the project. She emphasized how various artists within the studio, employing diverse techniques from pencil to pixel, contributed to the film's unique aesthetic. The narrative of "Lilo & Scratch" kicks off with Stitch enjoying a quiet moment on the couch with Lilo's pet fish, Pudge. The tranquility is soon disrupted by Lilo's arrival, introducing a new kitten she's named Scratch. What ensues is a comical and chaotic chase across the island, culminating in a laser-blasting showdown between Stitch and Scratch throughout the town, all sparked by Scratch's determined pursuit of Pudge. As artistic director Malcon Pierce enthusiastically noted, this delightful mayhem perfectly embodies the essence of these beloved characters and their penchant for peculiar pets.

The return of Lilo and Stitch to the theatrical stage with this new short is a testament to the enduring appeal of these characters and their unique adventures. It's a heartwarming reminder of the joy and chaos that a Hawaiian girl and her alien best friend can bring, promising both nostalgia for long-time fans and a fresh, exciting experience for new audiences.
