Disney's 'Hexed' Undergoes Significant Character Transformation

When Disney's chief creative officer, Jared Bush, first unveiled 'Hexed' at the D23 fan event in 2025, the narrative was outlined as the adventure of an unconventional teenage boy and his ambitious mother, whose unusual traits lead them to uncover magical abilities that upend their lives and reveal a concealed world of enchantment. However, by the release of its teaser trailer in June, the film's focus had shifted to a teenage girl. Directors Jason Hand and Fawn Veerasunthorn elaborated on this change during a roundtable discussion at the Annecy Festival.

According to Hand, the parent-child dynamic was always central to the storyline, and they found the most compelling version of this relationship to be between a mother and a daughter. This revision, he explained, resonated more deeply with the concept of witchcraft and the pursuit of empowerment that the protagonist embodies. A preview at Annecy provided further insight into the plot of 'Hexed', scheduled for release on November 25. The story follows Billie (voiced by Hailee Steinfeld), a defiant teenager struggling to fit in at school. Her life takes an unexpected turn when a bracelet, which her mother Alice (voiced by Rashida Jones) insisted she wear, comes off. This incident triggers the manifestation of magical powers that Alice has suppressed since Billie's infancy. The directors assure audiences that 'Hexed' will offer a distinct perspective compared to other Disney films about young girls questioning their familial connections, such as 'Moana', penned by Bush, and 'Encanto', which he co-wrote and co-directed.

Veerasunthorn highlighted that while certain story archetypes consistently draw audiences due to their emotional resonance, the specificity of 'Hexed's' main character's circumstances and the intricate magical world system they created will ensure its individuality. Billie harnesses her newfound abilities to access Hexe, an mystical realm established by witches who escaped persecution and now coexist harmoniously with nature. In this world, Billie is welcomed by a group of enchanted objects, reminiscent of the cursed servants in 'Beauty and the Beast'. She must master her powers while evading formidable witches capable of transforming into flocks of ravens. Although the premise of a discontented child discovering their destiny in a magical world echoes 'Harry Potter' and Disney's 'The Owl House', Veerasunthorn asserts that 'Hexed' will stand apart. She emphasizes that the film's core lies in a young girl's journey to unlock her true potential, but unlike typical hero's journeys, her mother is the crucial element that distinguishes this narrative.

Ultimately, Billie embarks on a quest to uncover her family's hidden past to rescue her mother. As a daughter who has also experienced motherhood, Veerasunthorn expressed her enthusiasm for telling a story that piques curiosity about the unexplored facets of mothers' lives—their joys, misadventures, and missteps. This narrative suggests that a significant part of who individuals become is shaped by their heritage and the experiences that predate their own existence, fostering a sense of wonder and connection across generations.
