In Phoenix, a local food bank is facing a significant increase in demand during this holiday season. Volunteers and staff at Desert Mission Food Bank are working hard to meet the rising needs of the community. Marzia Doucet, a local resident, relies on the food bank to provide healthy food for her family. With an 83-year-old mother and a 20-year-old daughter with special needs, she finds it difficult to afford proper nutrition on her own.

Holiday Season Demand Surge

Desert Mission Food Bank has seen a roughly double increase in the number of clients compared to last year. During the holidays, when families typically gather for feasts, the need for food has become more critical. With around 300 clients per day by mid-November, the non-profit operating under HonorHealth has served almost 40% more households than during the same time last year. Since June, they have been serving over 5000 people each month, a remarkable growth that poses both a challenge and an opportunity.

Volunteers and staff are stepping up their efforts five days a week to ensure that food reaches local households. Community partnerships, especially the Grocery Rescue program, play a crucial role in getting food to the food bank. Four drivers are sent to 75 grocery stores across the Valley to pick up donations, which are then distributed within 24 to 36 hours.

Meeting the Needs of Families

Marzia Doucet's story is a common one. She takes care of her elderly mother and daughter with Down syndrome and diabetes. The food bank provides her with essential items like juice, muffins, and heart-healthy foods that are low in sodium and fat. These items help her ensure that her family gets the nutrition they need.

For families like Doucet's, having access to fresh products year-round is crucial. The food bank's efforts to provide a steady supply of healthy food make a significant difference in their lives.

Donation Needs and Opportunities

During this busy holiday season and beyond, the food bank is in need of donations. Some of the most needed items include pasta, cereal, canned veggies (with low sodium encouraged), 100% juice, chicken and tuna in water, canned beans, dry beans, peanut butter, and bottled water. Additionally, paper products like toilet paper and paper towels, hygiene products, and baby formula (orange or blue Similac for ages 12 months and younger) are in great demand.

You can make a difference by donating to Desert Mission Food Bank. They are open Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. For more details, visit their website.
