Defensive Adjustment: Eagles' Dominance over Rams

Nov 25, 2024 at 5:06 AM
In this intense showdown, the Eagles' defense stepped up in a big way. Los Angeles started strong with two successful possessions but then faced a stern test. The Eagles' defense, deep and talented, held them in check. Prior to garbage time, LA had a mere 222 total net yards, going 0-for-7 on third down and averaging just 4.4 yards per play. Matthew Stafford was limited to 186 passing yards, with 5 quarterback sacks subtracting 45 yards.

Brandon Graham's Tremendous Performance with an Injury

Defensive end Brandon Graham had a remarkable game. He not only had a quarterback sack but also reached Stafford a second time to tip the ball as he threw. In total, he had three quarterback hits and a pair of tackles for loss. Graham played with great energy and jump off the ball, exuding confidence on the field. Unfortunately, after the game in the locker room, he revealed that he suffered a torn triceps muscle. Sirianni expressed his admiration, saying Graham is "one of my favorite guys I’ve ever been able to coach. We’ll see where he is at. Not ready to talk about it yet. Holding out hope and we’ll see."

Saquon's Dominating Running Game

In the second half, Barkley took the first play and showed his speed and excellent blocking. With great blocking from left guard Landon Dickerson and others, he took it 70 yards for an electrifying touchdown, giving the Eagles a two-score lead. He finished the night with an Eagles-record 255 yards, gaining yards after contact and eluding defenders. Another dominant performance from Barkley, who also added 47 yards on 4 receptions. As the league's leading rusher (1,392 yards) and yards gained from the line of scrimmage (1,649), he led a running game that amassed 314 yards, overpowering the Rams.

Huge Decision in the Third Quarter

Late in the third quarter, the Eagles made a huge decision. They accepted a holding penalty against Los Angeles at the Philadelphia 14-yard line. Linebacker Nakobe Dean was perfect with a blitz all night. Instead of a fourth-and-3, the Rams were moved back 10 yards and faced a third-and-13 play. Milton Williams reached quarterback Matthew Stafford for a huge sack, and placekicker Joshua Karty pushed a 47-yard field goal attempt wide right. This kept the Eagles' 27-14 advantage.

The Entire Front Seven's Impact

The entire front seven really got into the game, delivering good pressure on Stafford. They did a great job against the run and stayed disciplined against the Rams' eye-candy offense. Josh Sweat added a sack, Jalen Carter was disruptive despite added attention all night. Moro Ojomo won with his get-off at the line of scrimmage, and the Eagles stuffed Los Angeles. A key statistic shows that LA was zero for the game (0-for-8) on third downs, highlighting the fantastic defensive effort.

Rookie Cornerbacks' Performance

Rookie cornerbacks Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean faced their biggest tests against the Rams' receiving corps and performed exceptionally well. They showed no signs of flinching and demonstrated incredible maturity and excellent technique. They limited the Rams, with the Rams having only one receiving play of +20 yards (29 yards to Puka Nacua).

Jake Elliott's Perfect Night

Jake Elliott was flawless, converting 3 field goals and 4 PAT kicks. His accuracy and reliability were on full display, providing a crucial boost to the team.

Hurts' Outstanding Performance

Hurts was outstanding, completing 15 of 22 passes for 179 yards and a touchdown. He was also effective on the ground, gaining 39 yards on 12 attempts. He ran when the opportunity arose and maintained accuracy in the passing game. Once again, he had zero giveaways, a key number to remember.
