The Suncoast Science Center/Faulhaber Fab Lab is gearing up for an exhilarating celebration of creativity and engineering with the 10th annual RC Custom Car Open. This year, students from kindergarten to 8th grade will embark on a "Journey Through Time," crafting remote control cars that blend historical inspiration with futuristic design. The event promises not only thrilling races but also invaluable learning experiences that foster teamwork, critical thinking, and technical skills.

A Gateway to Tomorrow's Innovators

Pioneering Young Minds in Hands-On Workshops

Starting in February, young engineers will gather in hands-on weekend workshops where they can dive into the world of customization. Teams of 2-4 members will explore cutting-edge technology provided by the Fab Lab, transforming ordinary RC cars into extraordinary vehicles. Volunteers will be on hand to offer guidance, ensuring each team has the support they need to bring their visions to life. These sessions are designed to fit various schedules, with weekday and evening options available, making it easier for all participants to join. The workshops serve as a crucial stepping stone for participants. They provide a platform for students to experiment with different materials and techniques, encouraging innovation at every turn. By working side by side with mentors and peers, students gain practical experience in problem-solving and project management. This collaborative environment nurtures creativity and fosters a sense of community among young innovators.

Celebrating a Decade of Creativity and Competition

The climax of this journey arrives in April when teams converge for two days of intense competition. On April 11, the design competition takes center stage as teams present their meticulously crafted RC cars to a panel of judges. Each design must embody the "Journey Through Time" theme, reflecting both historical elements and futuristic concepts. Judges will evaluate the craftsmanship, creativity, and functionality of each vehicle, rewarding those that push the boundaries of imagination. The following day, the action shifts to the race tracks. Participants will navigate custom-built courses filled with obstacles inspired by the theme. These challenges test not only the performance of the cars but also the strategic thinking and adaptability of the drivers. Spectators can expect heart-pounding races that showcase the best of what these young engineers have achieved over the past eight weeks.

Rewards Beyond the Finish Line

Beyond the thrill of competition, participants stand to gain much more. Cash prizes, scholarships, and trophies await the winners, all designed and crafted within the Fab Lab itself. However, the true rewards lie in the skills developed throughout the program. Students will walk away with enhanced technical abilities, improved critical thinking, and a deeper understanding of teamwork. These experiences lay the foundation for future success, creating memories that last a lifetime. Moreover, the RC Car program is powered by a dedicated committee of high school student leaders who oversee every aspect of the event. From selecting the annual theme to leading workshops and constructing racetracks, these leaders play a pivotal role in shaping the program. Their commitment strengthens the peer-to-peer learning environment, where both racers and volunteers develop leadership and life skills.

A Community Built on Innovation and Support

Behind the scenes, the RC Custom Car Open thrives on the support of sponsors like the Gulf Coast Community Foundation, Steinwachs Family Foundation, and Forza Wealth Management. Their contributions ensure that the program remains accessible and impactful for all participants.
