Day 186: Hiker's Struggles with Resupply and a Mouse Encounter

Dec 8, 2024 at 3:34 AM
The start of Day 186 was filled with both anticipation and the unexpected. From a hearty hiker breakfast at Shaw’s to the challenges of resupplying in a town with internet issues, every moment was a new experience.

Unforgettable Hiking Journeys and the Trials Along the Way

Morning Delights

Morning began on a positive note as Shaw’s hosted a renowned hiker breakfast with delicious pancakes. All the hikers gathered eagerly, ready to enjoy a full house of good food. Poet and Hippie Chick, the former thru hikers running the hostel, cooked and served with care. It was a true family (or tramily) affair as we exchanged trail stories and made predictions about Katahdin. However, the weather forecast for the week ahead wasn't the best, with rain and falling temperatures potentially turning Katahdin into a winter wonderland before October 15.

Despite the potential challenges, we all hoped that the weather would hold long enough for a safe ascent and descent. It was a time of shared experiences and camaraderie among the hikers.

Resupply Woes

After breakfast, it was time for resupplying. The plan was to shop at the local grocery store and withdraw more cash from the ATM. But when it came to checking out, a snag occurred. My credit card didn't work, and despite multiple attempts, the transaction couldn't go through due to internet issues. Oddly, some patrons were able to make their card transactions while mine, including debit, had no luck.

I also tried using the ATM, but since the internet was down, it wasn't working either. Frustrated, I had to wait as there was nothing I could do. Shaw’s had cell service and could get transactions through, but I only had some cash on me, which wasn't enough to cover all my food and leave the required $10 for the Birches. I had backup options, but they weren't ideal.

After the Setback

When faced with a trail-wreaking wrench in the plans (which always happens at least once), I took a deep breath and found a different path. Back at Shaw’s, I spent time with more hikers to distract myself. Around 10:30, I decided to go ahead with Plan B and started hiking again.

I completed my resupply at Shaw’s and opted for a food drop at the halfway point of the Hundred Mile Wilderness to lighten my load. With that done, I said goodbye and walked the 1 mile (downhill this time) back to the trailhead.

Evening Adventures

The day was gloomy and chilly, but I was happy to be back on the trail. Due to my late start, I didn't reach the planned shelter. Night fell, and I found myself night hiking, which was a new and comfortable experience for me.

Just before my planned stealth site, I met Van Gogh and his dog, Riley. Riley was excited to see another human and started barking. After our greetings over Riley's howls, I continued hiking as I knew Van Gogh was likely headed to the same stealth site. Soon after, I found another stealth site next to the next river ford. The shelter was only a half mile away on the other side of the river, but I didn't want to take any risks in the dark.

As I set up camp and got my things in order, I was startled by a weird scratching sound on top of my tent. To my surprise, I saw a mouse running around. I quickly hung my food bag away from the tent and went to sleep, hoping not to have any uninvited guests during the night.

And that was Day 186, filled with a mix of joys, challenges, and unexpected moments.
