Two Massachusetts State Police troopers were injured after stopping an SUV in Dorchester on Jan. 1, state police said Tuesday.

At around 10:30 a.m. on Blue Hill Avenue, a state trooper saw a black Land Rover on the road with no front license plate and very dark tinted windows, state police said in a statement. The trooper stopped the SUV at the intersection with Tennis Road, with another trooper behind him.

When they asked the driver to lower his window, they noticed all three men inside the SUV “appeared to be extremely nervous,” the statement read. Troopers identified the driver, Tyliqure Ortiz-Howard, 25, of Boston, back at their cruiser, and found a criminal history involving firearms in connection with him.

A Boston police officer arrived as backup before the troopers returned to the Land Rover and asked Ortiz-Howard to step out of the SUV. State police said the driver became hostile and started yelling without stepping out of the SUV. The troopers reached in through the driver’s window to open the door.

Ortiz-Howard then drove south on Blue Hill Avenue, with the door striking both troopers, state police said. The troopers noticed one of the passengers throw items out one of the SUV’s windows as it turned onto Woodhaven Street.

Boston police later spotted the SUV on Route 1 in West Roxbury heading toward Dedham, state police said. A Dedham police officer then found the SUV parked behind a Holiday Inn on Ariadne Road, where the three men ran into the hotel.

State police, along with Boston and Westwood police, converged on the hotel at around 10:55 a.m. One trooper saw one of the Land Rover’s passengers, Luis Santos, 24, of New Bedford, run from the hotel before he was arrested. Boston, Dedham and Westwood police found Ortiz-Howard and the other passenger, Tristian Howard, 21, of Brockton, on the hotel’s second floor and arrested them both.

The two injured state police troopers were not seriously injured and both were part of the police effort to arrest the three men, state police said.

State police later determined the SUV’s window tint allowed only 3% of light through, well below the legal requirement of at least 35%.

While he was placed in a cell at the Massachusetts State Police barracks in Milton, Ortiz-Howard was found to have a pink pill on him, state police added. At some point, he had attempted to flush it down a toilet. State police did not identify what the pink pill was.

Ortiz-Howard was charged with assault and battery on a police officer, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, failure to stop for police, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, number plate violation, window obstruction violation, possession of a Class E narcotic, marked lane violation and driving without a license in possession.

Howard and Santos shared the same charges: assault and battery on a police officer, assault with a dangerous weapon and accessory after the fact of a felony.

A bail clerk set bail for each of the men at $25,000 in cash and they ere taken to Norfolk County House of Correction to be held unless they were able to post bail. Their arraignments are expected on Tuesday in the Dorchester Division of the Boston Municipal Court.
