Critical Role has unveiled the primary adventurers for its anticipated Daggerheart miniseries, "Age of Umbra: Sallowlands." This announcement provides the first look at the ensemble poised to delve into the shadowy corners of the Halcyon Domain, arriving strategically just days after the scheduled release of Campaign 4's latest segment.
Revealed on X.com, the announcement showcased character designs for Dillwyn and Badger, Sister, Caguama, Alphonse, and Mercy, described as resilient "sun-warped" survivors. Following the format of last year's "Age of Umbra" miniseries, "Sallowlands" will consist of six episodes, commencing on July 9. The cast boasts Critical Role co-founder Laura Bailey, alongside Jennifer English, Abubakar Salim, Vico Ortiz, and Zachery Renauldo. English and Ortiz, although new to Critical Role, bring considerable D&D expertise to the project.
An official description on the Daggerheart website portrays the series as an exploration of “desperation, survival, and love in the face of overwhelming odds” within a perilous landscape, where protagonists confront “brutal adversaries and high stakes.” The original "Age of Umbra" was characterized as a darker counterpart to Critical Role’s typically lighter fantasy narratives, a tone explicitly reinforced by the newly revealed characters. The Halcyon Domain is depicted as a godforsaken world where deceased souls are reborn as monstrous entities, and a corrupting ethereal mass, the Umbra, pervades everything. Communities find solace and hope in "Sacred Pyres." This grim backdrop and the grotesque character designs draw parallels to titles like "Elden Ring" rather than conventional heroic fantasy, a sentiment echoed by Matthew Mercer, who previously described the setting as "Soulsborne-esque, super dark and deadly.” While specific character-player assignments are not yet confirmed, initial indications suggest Bailey might portray Dillwyn, a goblin ranger with a badger companion. English appears to be Sister, a towering, pale wizard, and Salim is likely Caguama, a turtle-like Galapa druid. Ortiz’s character, Alphonse, resembles a figure from "Bloodborne," while Renauldo’s Mercy is an undead giant with weaponized forearms.
As per Critical Role’s current schedule, the final two parts of Campaign 4, episode 31, are slated for July 2 and July 7. Both Mercer and Bailey are involved in this campaign, with no episodes announced beyond these dates. While Critical Role has not explicitly stated a hiatus for Campaign 4 during "Sallowlands," the timing suggests the six-episode miniseries could command the spotlight throughout the remainder of the summer, offering fans a fresh, darker narrative to immerse themselves in.
This venture into a more somber narrative reflects an artistic evolution, pushing the boundaries of traditional fantasy and offering a compelling exploration of struggle and resilience within a uniquely desolate world. It showcases the creators' dedication to diverse storytelling, fostering engagement and providing an enriching experience for its devoted audience.
