After his playing days, Perry's passion for basketball led him to the coaching ranks, where he became McCarver's top assistant at both Section and Skyline. For nearly a decade, he played a crucial role in the success of the girls and boys basketball programs, helping Skyline win the Class 1A Girls state championship in the 2020-21 season. During that same season, Perry also served as the Skyline varsity boys head coach, leading the Vikings to a 22-9 record, an area tournament championship, and a berth in the Class 1A Northeast Regional.
Speaking to the Sentinel in July, Perry expressed his excitement about the new opportunity, saying, "I'm a basketball guy that eats, sleeps and breathes basketball 24 hours a day and this allows me to do what I love everyday. It's a blessing." He also acknowledged the support and guidance he had received from Coach McCarver and the countless players he had mentored over the years, stating, "I'm thankful to Coach McCarver and all the kids that have played for me. I'm very appreciative to everybody that's supported me. A lot of little things added up to make this (opportunity at Samford) happen."
The Skyline Basketball program, where Perry had made such a significant impact, expressed their heartfelt condolences, stating, "Prayers going out to the Perry/Prince Families and All of Viking Nation. Coach T.J. played a huge role in what our programs are today and impacted more kids than anyone will ever know. He will be missed by so many in green!!"
The Section Boys Basketball program also paid tribute to Perry, remembering him as a "former Section state champion, alumni and coach" who "will be missed greatly! He was a true basketball guru and friend of the program, who loved seeing everyone succeed."
The Samford Men's Basketball program, where Perry had just begun his college coaching career, also expressed their sorrow, stating, "The entire Samford community is saddened by the tragic passing of T.J. Perry. Our hearts and prayers are with T.J.'s entire family and he will be greatly missed."
Through his unwavering dedication, his infectious passion for the game, and his genuine care for the well-being of his players, T.J. Perry left an indelible mark on the basketball community in Jackson County and beyond. His legacy will continue to inspire generations of players and coaches, who will strive to emulate the values and principles that he embodied.
As the community gathers to honor T.J. Perry's memory, it is clear that his impact will endure long after his passing. He may be gone, but his spirit and the lessons he imparted will live on, guiding and motivating those who follow in his footsteps, both on and off the court.
